I am passionate about widening participation in UK Higher Education, engaging in liaison activity with schools in promoting the subject of Geography for students from junior school (Year 3-6) to A-level and communicating to the public about my research.
Some of my outreach activities have included:
-
Practical demonstrations of volcanic hazards and the types of eruptions as part of British Science Week.
-
Workshops in schools with students between years 7-13 on topics including: Studying Geography at GCSE, A-Level and University, and Your Geographical World.
-
Workshop and mini-lectures at the Royal Geographical Society as part of the Going Places with Geography and Bridging the Gap events.
-
Mini research talks at Festival of Discovery, Falmouth.
-
Sessions on Studying at University and creative workshops as part of the University of Exeter Exeter Scholars programme.

In addition to school visits, I have presented at a number of public and academic conference events, including co-chairing a pedagogy workshop at the Royal Geographical Society Annual Conference 2023, delivering the keynote at a conference in Malta in 2018, along with other events.

In 2018, I was delighted to be awarded joint first place for my creation of a card game of Malta's natural hazards as part of a public engagement competition run by Liverpool Hope University's Centre for Education Policy Analysis (link here). You can download a watermarked sample here.
